If you are suffering from severe elbow pain due to arthritis or other conditions, a total elbow replacement may be the solution you need. Contact Dr. Boltuch’s office today to schedule a consultation and take the first step towards a pain-free life and restored elbow function.
The elbow is a complex hinge joint comprised of three bones: the ulna, humerus, and radius. Each of these bones plays a critical role in elbow movement. The ulna and humerus primarily enable the flexion and extension of the elbow, while the radius and humerus allow for the rotation of the forearm. Over time, conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, previous fractures, or chronic overuse can lead to the development of arthritis in the elbow, resulting in pain and reduced range of motion.
For patients suffering from severe elbow arthritis, non-surgical treatments like anti-inflammatory medications, elbow injections, and bracing may provide temporary relief. Arthroscopic surgery can also be beneficial in some cases. However, when these treatments fail to offer lasting pain relief, a total elbow replacement may be recommended to restore function and alleviate pain.
Total elbow replacement, also known as elbow arthroplasty, involves replacing the damaged parts of the elbow joint with artificial components. This procedure aims to reduce pain and improve the range of motion in the affected elbow.
Recovery from a total elbow replacement involves several phases:
