If you are suffering from shoulder pain due to a large rotator cuff tear or shoulder arthritis, a reverse shoulder replacement may be the solution you need. Contact Dr. Andrew office today to schedule a consultation and take the first step towards a pain-free life and restored shoulder function.
The shoulder is a complex “ball and socket” joint comprised of two main parts: the humeral head (the ball) and the glenoid portion of the scapula (the socket). The rotator cuff, a group of four tendons, surrounds the shoulder joint, playing a crucial role in shoulder movement and stability. These tendons help move the shoulder and compress the humeral head against the glenoid, ensuring smooth and pain-free motion.
While the shoulder can often compensate for small tears in the rotator cuff, larger tears can lead to significant pain and limited mobility. Over time, these tears can contribute to the development of arthritis in the shoulder joint, further exacerbating pain and functional limitations.
A reverse shoulder replacement is a specialized surgical procedure designed to address severe rotator cuff tears accompanied by arthritis. Unlike a traditional shoulder replacement, this procedure involves reversing the natural anatomy of the shoulder joint. The humeral head (ball) is replaced with a socket implant, and the glenoid (socket) is replaced with a ball implant.
This innovative implant configuration provides greater stability to the shoulder joint and does not rely on a functioning rotator cuff to operate effectively. Instead, it leverages the strength and function of the deltoid muscle (the large shoulder muscle) to compensate for the deficient rotator cuff, allowing patients to regain shoulder function and reduce pain.
